What can cause coolant to not reach optimal temperature?

I have a 2004 Mitsubishi Galant 2.4L 4 cylinder engine with 289,928 miles. It's having a weird coolant problem where the engine will not reach optimal temperature. I even had a code for coolant temperature below threshold but then it disappeared. But I can still see the temp gauge will always stay below or close to the median. Any idea of what's causing this?

Also funny story, a while back I got a coolant service done. Before the coolant service, I was driving around with little to no coolant in my engine yet it never overheated. (Don't ask why.) I could tell it was low especially in the winter when my heat would blow cold every time I came to a stop and idled.

  • Well either the thermostat isn't staying closed long enough and it runs too cool. Or you have a false reading from the temperature system. Not reading right? Either the gauge is bad or the sending unit

Got it, I'll take a look at those and see. Thanks Scotty.
