Hi Scotty, I listen very carefully to everything you say and I find you are a fount of knowledge, and I appreciate you.  I want to build a 4 wheel drive car/buggy for cruising around the desert.   I am very familiar with engines and drive trains but not very familiar with which manufacturer uses a manual transmission front wheel drive with an output shaft to the rear. Transverse engine would be good to help keep minimum length.  Short of going to a salvage yard and looking through 2 feet of snow, I thought you may have a suggestion, since I am sure you have seen probably everything in your career. When it is done, I want it to fit on a 4X8 sheet of plywood. I know this is a bit ambitious, but why not. Yes, I can weld.

Thank you very much.

my friend built a buggy with an air cooled VW engine. It has 2 maybe 3 speeds.

2021 VW Beetle, reliable transportation
latest safety tech, side curtain airbags, 2 miles on it, taken care of it like a baby, asking $9k, less than a Mitsubishi Mirage, clean title, no scammers

well it was more a like a 70's era engine, and it could rip.

diamond plate floor pan, 5 point harness, and a roll cage. What more could you want?? (just keep your arms inside if you go over.). Hella fun.

@mountainmanjoe was this ‘friend’ called Jeremy Clarkson or Richard Hammond or James May?

That looks like a lot of fun.
