What is Best Scan Tool

Hi Scotty,

What is the most comprehensive scan tool for non- dealers? I have a 2006 RX8 with ABS/DSC issues and my Bosch scanner only reads the PCM. Looking for a scan tool that is flexible enough to handle most car makes while enabling diagnostics on all major sub systems.

Love your Channel,

James Sanders

Click on the "Tools" link at the top of the page and take a look at the ones Scotty recommends there.

@daywalker , what is the minimum he needs to spend to scan his ABS/DSC system?

Since you said you also need to scan every major subsystem (and computer modules) that definitely moves you up in the scan tool hierarchy (and price point).  For your requirements, I would look at the $330 Innova 5610 (essentially the same as what Scotty uses in his videos although his says RS, but it is exactly the same thing just the color is different).

See below:

To be safe, check to see all the features it can perform for your vehicle: scroll down to ‘Coverage Checker’ down below on that page and select the tool and your vehicle.

It also tells you which bi-directional services (if any) it can perform.  The tool does bi-directional for certain makes and models, but not all of them, unfortunately.

Also, if you buy the Innova tool I recommend you buy from them direct on their store to get the latest firmware, or from one of their authorized dealers, and to not get scammed - but ordering from them direct might be wise.  Some of these scan tool companies (like Autel) don’t sell direct and rely on dealers, but it seems Innova sells direct - which is a plus.
