I wanted to do a spark plug inspection on my 2017 Ford Fusion SE. I know that the Ford ecoboost engines have problems with coolant intrusion into the cylinders. So I removed the spark plug boot, and to my surprise I didn't see the spark plug terminal, but rather I saw this "thing" sticking up from the spark plug hole. It appeared to be some kind of covering on the spark plug terminal. Simple question....What the $%#@ is that??? The boot came out clean with no signs of ripping or tearing. I was just wondering what that is, and can I remove that without any issues?
How about this-

You can find these at any auto parts store online. Next time, would you please provide ALL the information about the vehicle requested in the first paragraph? Thank you.
YES!!! That was it!!! Do I need to buy some of those and replace them too???
I am guessing that the answer is "YES".
Thank you very much!
@new-car - If they're in good condition, no. If you're not sure, yes, replace them along with new plugs.
Next time, please post pictures of any unidentified "thing". (instructions in the READ ME FIRST topic).
If others hadn't have posted links I would have no way of knowing what "thing" you're talking about.
Do you mean one of these?

If you're going to the trouble to "inspect" the plugs, why not just replace them with new? They are 5 years old after all.
Yes, possibly. I removed the boot. And there wasn't any sign of tearing of the boot. That could be what I was looking at. It was very long and thin though. I was just wondering if I could take that out, and just replace the spark plug with the boot? It didn't quite look like that. It was very long and thin as far as I could tell.
I was going to do exactly that. Replace all of the plugs. I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't going to be missing anything which was supposed to be there in the original installation.
Even though I have a 2017 ford fusion, this is identical to what I saw when I removed the spark plug boot on my car.
That's all well and good, but how the heck is anyone supposed to know what you are talking about if they didn't happen to see your first post about this and remember it? This should not have been posted as a separate topic. There is a reason for the following in the forum rules, please take note of it for the future:

Ok....sorry.
