When should TPMS illuminate in my 2018 RAV4?

Got a 2018 Toyota Rav4 LE automatic, FWD, 26,000 mi. last fall. I have checked the tire pressure a couple of times and the tires were 4o to 45 psi when they are supposed to be 51 psi. Should not the low press. warning light come on? If so what should I do? I am 71 years old with health problems and can't do much. Thanks for your help.

Wait a minute!!!

51psi? Are you sure?? What is the recommended tyre pressure that’s mentioned in the door jamb?

And what’s the max psi rating of your tyres?

You and @mountainmanjoe are 100% correct:

What is the Recommended PSI for 2018 Toyota RAV4 Tires?

With two standard tire options (based on trim level), the 2018 Toyota RAV4 has two different ratings:

17″ Tire – 225/65R17
Front Tire Pressure Recommendation – 33 psi
Rear Tire Pressure Recommendation – 33 psi
18″ Tire – 235/55R18
Front tire Pressure Recommendation – 32 psi
Rear Tire Pressure Recommendation – 32 psi

Gosh, with 20psi above recommended, the ride quality in @69camero ’s RAV4 must feel like driving on the lunar surface..
Thanks for the values @pulp-friction

I think TPMS is supposed to come on when tire pressure is outside of usable range, and it's going to be hazard soon.

I think your Rav4 would drive perfectly fine down to 28psi.  My light comes on around 25psi.

Please read the above link for instructions to reset your TPMS for your Toyota RAV4.

There are certain instances when the tire pressure warning system in the RAV4 may not work correctly. These include:

  • A tire has been replaced with a non-OEM tire.
  • The vehicle is equipped with non-genuine Toyota wheels.
  • A window tint has been installed that affects radio wave signals.
  • There’s a lot of snow or ice on the car, specifically around the wheels or wheel housings.
  • Tire pressure is significantly higher than the stated level.

I would think if any of those things were an issue it would give you the warning light to tell you the computer is not in contact with the tire pressure sensor.

You could go to a parts store and see if they will put a scan tool on the vehicle and check if it's in contact with the sensors. Most of them will do this for free.

Alternately, you could go park by an air pump (any chains near you still have free air?) and just let the air out of the tire and see if the light comes on.  Then you're right at the pump to fill it back up and see if it turns off.

I personally would try to park so the valve was near 12 o'clock and bring a small stool or something to sit on while I played with it.
