I have a 2004 Suzuki Grand Vitara 2.5L V6 Automatic with only 80,000 miles on it and recently it's started having a knocking sound coming from the top of the engine. The oil has no flakes of metal in it and everything looks fine so far. I was told push-rods but a lot of other people have told me my motor doesn't have push-rods so now I'm stumped and not sure what to do. I've never had any issues with this car till recently when the knocking started.
Check all the pulleys and tensioner for anything loose. There are no push rods. The cams are chain driven.
As a quick test you can run the engine BRIEFLY without the fan belt. If the sound stops you know it's a belt-drive accessory or pulley making the noise.
Can you make a video demonstrating the sound, then put it up on youtube or a file sharing site and post the link here?
