So, I have a 1999 Civic Hatchback (178,000m) , and all of the sudden, when I started braking, my battery light comes on and the car begins to shake when it's stopped. The car also shakes when idle, but after a few minutes, the car shuts off and the battery and oil light come on - the oil is good - but when the car turns off, the lights stay on, so does the radio, then the AC just goes cold.
I would take it to an auto parts store and have them scan the codes. Once you have that information, post it here and we can help you out further.
I forgot to mention, the same thing happens when I'm turning to get out of my garage. A squealing noise happens when I turn the steering wheel, and sometimes the car will turn off and show the oil and battery light.
Sounds like a bad/failing/dirty idle air control valve.
Your engine isn't maintaining high enough rpms at idle to spin the alternator fast enough to deliver an adequate charge to the battery at idle. So the light comes on and the engine stalls.
Same for when you turn your steering wheel. Your idle is already too low and when you add the additional load of the power steering pump when turning the steering wheel, the engine dies
