A couple I know in Washington state, my relatives, are saying goodbye to their 2007 Cadillac Escalade with over 250,000 miles. It has a 6.2 V8.
I want to help them out.
Which of these cars should they get? Planning to buy this summer.
They are deciding between those:
2022 Nissan Armada, 5.6 V8
2022 Ford Expedition, 3.5 V6
2022 Chevrolet Tahoe, 3.0 Duramax Diesel
Thanks for your recommendations.
None of those if they want to keep the car for a long time.
For short term and lease YES
but for long term and reliability and maintenance cost NO
alternative
Honda Piolet Or passport (same car difference spacing)
Toyota rav4 or 4runner
Nissan armada v8
If u want luxury
Lexus, infinite or acura
If they plan to buy and hold onto for a long time, then neither of them.
Normally, I would say wait a few years and see how the new generation Toyota Sequoia does, but if they are that determined to buy new right now and they still are looking at those options you listed - then they are better off with the new Sequoia.
The above advice to try and score a Sequoia is solid. The Toyota twin turbo 6 is having some teething problems, but historically the Sequoia has been a great long term performer.
I just personally bought a 2022 GMC Sierra with the 3.0 Duramax. It’s only been out a few years (and mine only has 9000 miles on it) but the initial word is very positive (other than the rare crank-no-start issue). The fuel economy out of that motor is insane: 25 real world mpg in mixed driving, and I have gotten as much as 30 on the highway (700 miles on 1 tank). Diesel is more $ than gas right now, but it’s still a money saver.
For a good, unbiased opinion, take a look at Tim Esterdahl at “Pickup truck plus SUV Talk”. Nice YouTube channel and website. Should have good info on those motors. Maybe TFL too, though they tend to be more focused on amenities, off road performance, and towing than engines.
Out of that batch, I’d go Nissan Armada first, Chevy Tahoe Diesel second, then Ford Expedition. The Tahoe would probably be the most Escalade like, since I believe they are they same platform and lineage. TBH, none of those would be my top choice though.
For that size and type my top choice would be a Toyota Sequoia. It’s built on a truck frame, like the other SUV’s mentioned. My only concern is the V6 turbo, but I’ll take a new Toyota V6 turbo over the other makes, because I have a little more faith in the company. Granted no one knows the reliability since it is so new.
If they want a more truck feel to the SUV, the only other choices are the Lexus GX and LX, and the Toyota 4Runner. I would say the Land Cruiser as an option, but they stopped selling them in the US.
If they are open to a more car like SUV, the Toyota Highlander or the Honda Pilot / Acura MDX may be good alternatives. The Mazda CX-9 may be an alternative as well. First choice of this batch would be Highlander though for projected reliability.
