Why! Please stop considering the 5.4 3 valve V8, its a horrible engine.

Not sure of the correct years but pretty sure the second one has the 3 valve and the first one is a non-3 valve so I'd go first one but if someone knows which years used the 3 valve they could comment;)

Pretty sure 04 was the first year of the 3v engine

5.4 liter V8 3-valve a good engine if you maintain it correctly

Youtube mechanic Car Wizard says the first one is a lot more reliable than the second one.

@rosstheboss
That isn't what every other member says but then again I don't have the experience like I said the more people commenting the better. I think its (one of) the worst engines ever built.

The 2 valve 5.4L V8 was used in the 10th Gen F-150 (MY 1997-2004), which is OP’s first link (2002 F-150).  However, the next generation (MY 2004-2008) had the 3 valve 5.4L V8 and that engine in that generation is the one to avoid:
OP’s 2nd link (2005 F-150) has that engine. See video below by master mechanic Car Wizard who has replaced dozens of these engines for his customers. I would definitely trust him, since he’s worked in the shop replacing these engines. And keep in mind that second vehicle OP posted has 183,000 miles and we have no idea how meticulously the oil was changed on that engine by the previous owner;  it’s a gamble buying it.  See video below at 6:45

Thanks @Daywalker , Yeah I also linked that video good thing we have people like Scotty and Wizard around to help us🙂

I'll say it again: I don't care how you maintain it, the Triton 5.4L 3V was a terrible motor. Debatebly Ford's worst engine ever.

I've not yet met a mechanic who has a different opinion.
