If you need AWD, Subarus can be an excellent choice, especially with a manual transmission.

If you’re buying used, have a reputed mechanic inspect the car, before you buy it.

Those are good cars, however, I would also think twice about it due to the fact that it is turbocharged.

I have a manual 2018 WRX (not STI) and it’s very fun and pretty reliable. In this current TX snow/ice storm it’s been a champ, so I would assume it would be awesome for dirt whomping in the desert. But having said that, it’s very frantic (turbo lag, turbo boost, stiff clutch, etc) and just barely livable as a daily driver.

My son has a 2016 STI, which is basically the same as the 20. He is having fun with it blasting around the mountains in Colorado, but it’s a second car - just a toy.  It has a ton of power but it’s all at high RPMs so it is even worse than my car as a daily driver.

If you want a sports car, the STI is a lot of bang for the buck.  But if you are going to depend on it for basic transportation, it is going to get tiresome pretty fast. I’d look for a regular WRX.

One more thing. You didn’t specify whether it’s new or used. If used, why is a 1 year old car for sale.  Is there a good reason (guy lost his job or something) or is it a lemon?  You need to do your due diligence.

Agree with what @Dad2pwd said. I have a 2020 WRX that I just bought a few months ago and I absolutely love it, especially in this Dallas winter storm. If you want to modify the car, drive it really hard, and maybe track it then get the STI - it has a more tuneable engine and stronger transmission that can take the abuse. But, if you want something that’s fast, fun to drive as a daily, and still gives decent gas mileage then get the WRX - it uses a more modern engine design and has all the torque lower in the RPM range.
