I have a 2.4 2007 sky with 123k miles. LE5 engine with a 5L40e trans.
I just did a timing chain replacement, and when the car runs it sounds like it's got a supercharger. It is whining relative to the engine RPM.
I took the main drive and power steering BELTs off and started the car, hoping it was an alternator whine or something... the whine persisted.
I replaced the timing chain, balance chain, cam sprockets, and crankshaft timing and balance chain sprockets. I left the original auxiliary balance chain sprockets on.
Google says that this whine is likely because the balance shaft tensioner got 'racheted out' after replacement.
Do you think this is the cause for the whine?
Is there a chance that the new chains need to break in?
What does it mean for the tensioner to get racheted out? I replaced the balance tensioner/chain guards, all the timing was in line and I pulled the pin to activate it. I don't understand how it would get 'racheted out' when the tensioner only applies tension to the chain guard/plastic tensioner.
This was my first time doing major repairs like this, so everything was new to me. I followed the owners manual torque specs exactly. (I also snapped one of the timing chain cover volts off in the case, but there are 10 bolts plus the water pump bolt, so I was just going to leave it unless it started to leak. I was tensioning to the manufacturer spec, but this particular bolt never reached torque spec and snapped. I will extract it if I can if I have to take the timing cover off again)
Thanks
What is a "sky"?
Saturn Sky, my bad.
