Dear Friends,
Have a 1990 VW Fox wagon. We've had some sub zero weather for quite sometime. It was about that time that I noticed a high pitched whistle like sound when first started. This morning its 43 degrees. I opened the hood. Then started the engine and revved it. Couldn't hear a sound. When I drove it it made the sound but it was very faint and vanished in a few seconds. When its frigid I'd have to drive it down the road a ways to get rid of the noise. I'm talking about starting it and driving it and NOT allowing it to warm up at all. If it's allowed to warm up a little as I recall it never makes the whistle like sound. There seems to be some disagreement on VW Vortex whether the car should be allowed to warm up or not. In the majority of cases when the car is allowed to warm up there is never any whistling like noises. The water pump was replaced on 10/2021.

It could be from the drive belt. Inspect the drive belt.
Depends on your definition of Cold. If its below 15 degrees F Ill let my car warm up at least for 2-3 minutes then drive off. As mentioned could be the belt. Also if it has power sterring, try turning the wheel when you first start it to see if noise is affected.
Thanks for the answer...We had some mornings that were minus 15 below and during the day up into the single digits and teens if your lucky. Today its in the low 40's. No power steering and in fact I don't have the AC belt on it.
