Why do people have insanely loud exhausts that are even louder than actual race cars?

Scotty - I enjoy dining on the patio at a restaurant next to a bridge here in Portland. It seems every 5 minutes a car will floor it and their exhaust pipes are so damn loud it causes a headache. Granted, when I was a teenager I had loud pipes and I thought it was "cool", but these guys are well into their 20s and 30s and are still acting like little children. Can you once and for all call out these goofs and tell them a loud pipe actually throws off the fuel mix and causes LESS horsepower (unless they've tuned the chip). These loud exhausts are so damn annoying.

They are shouting to the world, "Look what an inconsiderate jerk I am!"

Don't you know?  Loud exhaust makes a car 'sound' faster.

These people are just showoffs and crave attention.

It's more than show-off and attention craving. Some people consider it a lifestyle. To you, it's an annoyance. But to some peeps, it's music, lol.

It is ONLY show-off and attention craving.

"Peeps" (actually "perps" in this case) who insist on foisting their "music" on people around them who have no interest in it are inconsiderate jerks, by definition. This is the case whether they are blasting Mozart through a 1000-watt audio system or annoying everyone around them with a super-loud exhaust system. It's called being a public nuisance.

some people consider living on welfare, dealing drugs, and committing felonies a "lifestyle" . To some peeps, it's life, lol. 🙄

Now, you KNOW I'm going to be the odd one out here. {black}:sweaty:

I LOVE a good, loud catback on a V8 motor. I buy the full systems, tuned for the car so there's definitely power gains to be had. I do it because I enjoy the sound. A lot of the guys who complain about engine noise say nothing when Bob the Accountant fires up the Harley to go for a ride.

As my wife says, "There's no point in owning a muscle car if you can't hear the muscle." My 2019 Mustang GT/CS had a MBRP full race exhaust on it and would literally wake the dead. I loved it. But understand I've been putting loud exhaust on every car I have owned since I was 16. I'm now 40. Right now, my Accord and my Ridgeline are stock because when you work in a shop all day the quiet is a nice change. I also am not a fan of how either would sound with aftermarket exhausts. But my other cars are mostly cammed, long tube headers, and extremely loud.

Do I do it to annoy anyone? No. In fact, I get a lot of thumbs ups and compliments when I'm out and about. It's just like you said about the radio noise: do I blare music over a 20k watt stereo? No. Do I get angry because someone else is? No. We are all free to have our hobbies as long as they don't hurt others. As long as the laws are not being broken, I see no issue with it. If someone is being stupid and making a bunch of noise late at night, they can get citations for disturbing the peace. But during the day? I'm sorry, but I love hearing loud engines. What can I say? It is, literally, what I do. {black}
