Why is there black grime (possibly oil) on the side of my 2000 Toyota Avalon?

Hi, I have a 2000 toyota avalon with 116,000 miles on it. I recently took it through a car wash, and a day or two later i noticed but looked like black tar or just grime underneath the driver's side door. It's also getting on the wheel spokes, but not the centers. That also only happens on the left side of the car. This wasn't on the passenger's side. Anyone know what's wrong or what I should check? Thanks.

If you've been along gravel-like roads, in my neck of the woods, the county spreads oil on them, to keep dust from flying around.

OR

You've been driving through a road construction zone where asphalt is fresh, well, that's also a suspect.

I appreciate it, but I've only driven down roads that have been paved for a while.

I don't think it's oil, but I do think a picture is worth 10,000 words in this situation. It'll really help the rest of us to figure it out for ya!
