Why would the coil in a distributor burn out?

I have a 1996 B14 Nissan Sentra it started cutting out while driving. I bought new plug wires and it still did the same thing. The mechanic drove it from my house and he said it's fixed it but it did the same thing while driving home. He then proceeded to deal with the fuel pump which is in the back, I don't know what else was done but he told me the distributor coil is burnt.

What could be the problem?

He is just guessing - your mechanic, … but he may just be right, … this time, accidentally! True, …
Coil is a large capacitor for storing very high voltage, it charges up and than fires, … discharges to light a spark. It’s a cycle, bazillion times this takes place, … and so, eventually, coils shorts out. Often, it start intermittently - as the coil warms up, … and finally, permanently, cold or hot.

Anyway, … no genius this mechanic of yours!
