Would a 1971 Mercury Cougar be a good first project car?

Hello Scotty and moderators. A guy near me is selling a running and driving 1971 Mercury Cougar for about 1000-1500 bucks. He has the car partially disassembled but can work on it anymore because of an injury. The interior is moldy but not horrible. The outside will need a paint job to say the least. And the front bumper, grille and doors have been removed to work on it but he still has them. Are these cars reliable? I know that they are pretty much a mustang with Lincoln styling, but I don’t know too much else. Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

This would be a great project car.  I wish I had one.  Go for it!

Sounds good to me. I had a mid-sixties Fairlane with a 289 which under the skin is very similar. (They're both based on the old Falcon platform.) That thing really took a beating when I was young and stupid (well, stupider) and just kept going. Very reliable and easy to work on. Just make sure it's not a rust bucket.
