You Were Right About RockAuto

1986-1988 Mazda 626 non-turbo muffler.  The RockAuto website shows the Bosal 171-389 as the replacement part.

1.  Shipment was delayed 24 hr.
2.  Shipping box arrived with multiple holes, allowing the muffler to stick out of the box.  Shipping box was re-taped by FedEx, causing the one-day delay.
3.  There were multiple dents on the muffler, possibly due to rough handling during shipping.
4.  The new muffler mounting bolt center distance is 3.7", which is too wide compared to the OEM muffler bolt center distance of 3.3".  New muffler cannot fit without additional modification.
5.  The new muffler supporting steel rods do not line up with the mounting holes on the vehicle.
6.  I received a quote of $30 from a local muffler shop to
    - Cut the two bolts on the new muffler, drill two holes with 3.3" bolt center distance, and re-weld two new bolts on the new muffler.
    - Cut the new muffler support steels rods, and re-weld them to the proper location so that they will line up with the mounting holes
     on the vehicle.
7.  I asked Rockauto to credit $30 back to my credit card so that I can pay the muffler shop to repair the new muffler so that it will fit the vehicle.  In
return, I will keep the muffler as-is, without warranty claim.  The other option...send a box with pre-paid return shipping since the origin box was   damaged during shipping.  I sent Rockauto 10 photos to support my claim.
8.  RockAuto claimed that they sent the correct part and I have to pay for return shipping.

I have filed a dispute claim with the credit card company.  Do you have another suggestion to get my $ back from RockAuto.  Please let you're audiences know about the risk of buying from RockAuto if the part doesn't fit...even it's Rockauto fault.

Baloney!  You didn't do enough research to order the correct part.

Did you go to RockAuto and input the model year and part? Perhaps you can educate other on the steps that you would take to obtain the correct part?

That's why when I order from them, I call on the phone and explain EXACTLY what I have and what I need. Haven;t had any problems with them.

As a side note, always get the part with the little heart next to it. those are the best.

RockAuto has a phone number, but there is no one to answer the phone. When was the last time you called Rockauto.  The voicemail said "we do not provide customer service by phone".  They claim that's by design to save you $$$. Part number 6593 (with the heart) will not fit due to the location of the mounting rods.

I would contact Rockauto again and insist on a full refund with them paying for shipping and threaten to not do business with them again as well as report them to Better Business Bureau (BBB) and to Scotty Kilmer who has over 1 billion views (most of any automotive Youtube channel) and 4.5+ million followers, who will expose them.  Be persistent and eventually they will refund you in full.

Their customer service is minimal to keep prices down. However, I have nothing but good things to say about Rockauto. I've been happily ordering hundreds of dollars worth of parts from them for over 5 years. I had a problem one time with a misprinted quantity. I used the claim process on their website and got my money refunded in a timely manner. I will keep recommending RA to everyone.

I ordered an air door actuator from them once. I found the part by entering my year, make, and model. The part looked right when I got it, but it didn't work after installation. After getting a replacement, I noticed that the pins in the plug were different from the OEM part I was replacing. I found that if I entered the part number on their site, it would give you the correct part, but the year/make/model search failed for this particular part.

I entered the Mazda's P/N but no hit. The OEM part is no longer available from Mazda.
