| Well it depends on how your timing gets adjusted. Any engine that's controlled electronically will be able to adjust timing according to octane (or how the fuel is burning as determined by the ECU). It's one of those things where you have to experiment with different octane ratings. If your car recommends 87 octane, you can try 91/93 and see if there is a noticeable benefit. | This is only the case if your ECU cannot advance ignition timing to compensate for 93 octane (almost all modern cars can compensate for different octane ratings with special sensors that detect what octane fuel is in the tank, and almost all cars can adjust ignition timing). 87 octane has a faster flame propagation compared to 93 octane, so it can be ignited really close to top dead center and give you full power. | If you really want to check it out yourself, here are a few places to look assuming the turbo is not blown: First make sure all the hose clamps on the induction piping are all tight. Turbocharged engines operate under pressure, so you don't want any of that sweet boost to leak out from loose piping. I'm talking about the piping from the turbo compressor all the way to the throttle body, including the intercooler (if equipped). Vacuum lines are VERY IMPORTANT on turbocharged engines. Vacuum lines are used for proper operation of the wastegate and turbo bypass valve. Make sure all the vacuum lines going to these components are in-tact and not loose/corroded. If all the pipes are nice and tight and the vacuum lines are good, check the turbo bypass valve on the turbo itself. Most of the time, this is the culprit for under-boost codes. This valve releases excess boost from the pipes when the throttle plate closes. So if the valve is stuck open or even worn out (they get worn out fast, especially the ones with a rubber diaphragm) it will prevent the turbo from creating pressure in the induction piping. The wastegate regulates the amount of exhaust gases used to spin the turbine, thus regulates how much boost the turbo produces. Best way to check the wastegate is by visual inspection while someone revs the engine. The wastegate arm should move back and forth as the engine revs, signifying that it is properly working. The last thing to check are the MAP sensor(s) themselves. Dirty MAP sensors can give inaccurate readings to the ECU on how much boost the turbo is actually making. Perhaps try cleaning them. Good luck to you, hopefully it's not a bad turbo as these other components are fairly easy to replace. | Hey Sir Scotty, can Mid Grade Gas with octane boosters be an equivalent Premium Gas? I have my eye on an 2007 Acura TL Type S that require Premium gas but if I could use mid grade with octane booster instead with no issues then great. Thanks in advance | |||||

| If your car be recommended to take 93, then go 93. From what I understand, almost all fuel cleaners and octane boosters are more akin to snake oil except a very limited few. Most of the commercial ones that you can buy off the shelf fall under this category. Since you bought a car with required 93 you are barred from going lower if you want to preserve the car decently. Modern computers can auto correct and all that, but not for long and especially with a turbocharged engine you would want to use the highest octane pump gas available. | Hello, I have a tricky question. On my Ford Escape 2014 2.0L AWD turbo, I always fill the tank with octane 91 gasoline and I am always getting a 535 km distance to empty (could be 525, I’ll document next time). With gas prices going through the roof in the beginning of summer, I decided to fill the tank with octane 87 just to try and the distance to empty went down to 469 km (I still had a little bit of octane 91 gas in the tank). | Thanks-I'm looking for the easiest way to measure boost on my 2015 Explorer 3.5 ecoboost. I've gotten underboost codes before but after I put my SCT program off. The boost measurements show up in negative numbers which surprises me. I'm sure there is a reason I'm not aware of in how it measures-however it seems unfriendly when you are looking for boost range and you get something else of no value. | |||||

| I do have a car that the manufacturer suggests using premium fuel and I use mid-grade in it with no octane booster. It makes no noticeable difference unless you lean really heavily into the loud pedal in which case you can feel the engine control system pulling back a little. Modern engine management systems are very good at adapting to different fuel grades but each model car can react differently. If your car really needs the higher octane to run properly you're better off just using the correct fuel with lab-certified octane rating instead of fooling aro ... | |||||

| Keep in mind that gas without ethanol has less octane compared to ethanol-blended gas. The whole point of blending ethanol in gas is to raise the octane and to have cleaner burning gas. Pure ethanol has an octane rating of 113, whereas pure gasoline is 85. You'll notice that pure higher-octane gas is more expensive because they use non-ethanol additives to increase the octane (anything race fuel oriented is expensive).
