[Solved] Octane boost vs premium gas

Ok I just bought a used 2018 Lincoln MKZ black label. Its a 3.0 turbo charged engine. It states it take the premium gas 93 octane i believe. I filled up and it cost me $68 for a full tank. If I put regular gas 89 octane I believe and add a bottle of octane boost from say Walmart for $1-2 it would save me almost $15 per tank. It it safe to do this?

If your car be recommended to take 93, then go 93. From what I understand, almost all fuel cleaners and octane boosters are more akin to snake oil except a very limited few. Most of the commercial ones that you can buy off the shelf fall under this category. Since you bought a car with required 93 you are barred from going lower if you want to preserve the car decently. Modern computers can auto correct and all that, but not for long and especially with a turbocharged engine you would want to use the highest octane pump gas available.

Short answer:No it is not if you want to give your car the best chance of surviving longer.

91 should be ok. That’s the highest we got in my state.

If only it were that simple, then we’d be doing it too.  (You must be on to a secret.) Stick to the premium gasoline in your area.  A 2018 Lincoln MKZ with Black Label (highest trim for that vehicle) is a premium vehicle, definitely not cheap brand new.  Why get a vehicle like that and then cheap out on gasoline or look for a shortcut?

Don't waste your $$ on octane boost from Wally world or any of the box stores, that stuff is crap.

From what i thought if its required then you need 93 but if its recommended you can use lower gas. Correct me if im wrong.

The manual will state whether it is recommended or required (there is a difference between the two here) and what might happen if you use lower octane gas.
