| Chevy sonic sounds like a semi | 21Relevance | 9 months ago | BaileyWalker337 | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Hi, I have a 2017 Chevrolet Sonic LT, 1.8L 4-cyl (MFI DOHC) with 131,828 miles. I’ve owned it since about 54,000 miles (around 5 years). It’s currently throwing the following codes: P0597 P0128 (appears 3 times on my scanner) P2181 P0131 P0171 p0420 The car has had p0420 (low catalyst efficiency) for a long time. More recently it has been idling rich, smelling like fuel, and running louder than normal. On my most recent drive it lost a lot of power, backfired on deceleration, and became extremely loud under acceleration (almost like a semi truck ... | |||||
| Answer to: Car white smoke | 21Relevance | 1 year ago | Chuck Tobias | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| White smoke is likely an indication of head gasket failure and that could have contaminated your catalytic converter or O2 sensors. While your converter could be shot there are other possible causes for p0420. However first you should probably check for head gasket failure. | Did any of those parts test as being bad or were you just loading up the parts cannon? Did you install OEM parts? You can find diagnostic information for P0421 in the link below. That code is similar to p0420: Also see this TSB for 2014-2016 Mazdas and P0421, check your VIN to see if your vehicle is listed as affected: | |||||

| Have you checked for other possible causes of this code? Check to see if your fuel filter is clogged. If not pressure test your fuel system (at the rail) and the fuel pump itself. Chances are your fuel pump is starting to fail. You failed to mention the mileage on your car but being that its 22 years old chances are something in the fuel system is worn out. | Answer to: Will an aftermarket catalytic converter work? | 21Relevance | 2 years ago | Hixster | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| ... have the longevity of factory units. Your CEL is being triggered to alert you of an issue, it doesn't define it. If your cat is clogged up, something caused this and that's what you need to fix. Otherwise you'll be right back in the same situation regardless of the 'type of CC' you install. It's important to note there are more causes for a p0420 than just a bad cat: | |||||

| Answer to: Abs and engine light | 21Relevance | 6 years ago | yaser | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Don't worry about the ABS light. You should fix the p0420 code first and reset the codes. The reason that ABS light came on is because you have an engine trouble code (P0420) and it triggers the ABS light (This is normal for Toyota cars). For the p0420, check out the sensors before and after the cat and if they are working properly, change them. most of the time, doing that will solve your engine code. Good luck. | |||||

However, it seems that the OBD monitor test on CAT bank 1 and bank are both ok. I think it says the test needs to be repeated 3 times with OK status before the CEL can turn OFF. | |||||
