01 Tahoe 4wd gas gauge works only when almost full and rpm hand stopped working is this a bad thing. Is there a way to only replace with a aftermarket one

Remove the instrument cluster and turn it over on a work bench. Check the solder joints for cracks and re-solder them. These old Chevys are famous for this problem.
