My friend has a 02 Honda CRV 150k miles. He does not have reverse. He said he checked trans fluid and found shavings from that gear. Un sure how it was damaged. He is offering me the car for $500. Says the tranny is great other than doesnt reverse.
Could this car actually last another 50k+ miles.

The transmission is physically damaged. You might need a new one soon. It is your call if you want to spend money on that.

Offer him $100, $250 max. Even if the rest of the car is great, you're still going to have to cough up $3,000 for a new or rebuilt trans really soon.
