My friends 1978 vw bus has recently started dieseling. Was wondering if there was anything for him to try to fix it? Thanks.

Well if it's carbureted a generally means the carburetor needs rebuilding.

You could check ignition timing, idle speed, and check for vacuum leaks. 1970s emission-controlled engines sometimes have an anti-dieseling solenoid that would either shut off fuel or close the throttle. (These are normally found on carbs, not needed with fuel injection.) It might also be due to carbon buildup in the cylinders, maybe an Italian tuneup is in order.

Overly rich carburetor or incorrect ignition timing or both.
