1990 Ford Ranger compressor leaking

I have a 1990 Ford Ranger xlt 2.3L 140cid L4 half cab automatic transmission. It currently has about 115,000 miles on it and the compressor is leaking refrigerant and I’m planning on replacing it myself. If it is leaking real bad do I still have to take it somewhere to have it vacuumed out before replacing it?

Unless you want to risk breaking Federal law, yes, unless the leak is so bad that the system is already empty.

Be sure to buy a new compressor, not rebuilt.
