1992 Camry AC blows cold and stops

Hi Scotty,

I have a 1992 camry. the AC blows cold on cold start and then after 15 minutes blows warm. If I then turn the AC button off for 20 minutes and turn it on again it'll blow cold again for a few minutes. I have to repeat this process to get some form of cooling. The shop said there was enough refrigerant pressure when tested and just did an evac and recharge and removed the moisture and said they couldn't find the problem.

I did use some lysol spray a couple months ago  in the AC outside air intake (near wipers) to clean out a smell and I'm worried this may have done some harm.

Thank you in advance.

The Lysol didn't do any harm.  You need to take the car to an automotive AC specialist for diagnosis and repair.

Even in a 1992 model the computer would be involved in operating the air conditioning compressor and may shut it down depending on what sensors are telling it. (That's the case even in my '86.) The problem is that without modern OBD2 diagnostics a fault has to be tracked down manually and these days a lot of mechanics are not prepared to do that.

If you have the correct amount of refrigerant and the compressor is producing the right pressures it sounds like you have an electrical/electronic problem shutting the AC down after it runs a while. It's also possible your blend door has gone funny in the head, but it seems more likely the compressor is being shut down. It could be a problem with low or high pressure sensors, or a temperature sensor. (The car is 30 years old. It could be practically anything.) Is the compressor clutch still engaged when you start getting warm air out of the vents? At the compressor is the high pressure line hot and low pressure line cold?

If the mechanic that worked on it is not able to do the required diagnostics and you are unfamiliar with working on air conditioning it would be best to take it to an AC specialist as @doc says.
