1993 camry AC works only for half an hour

Hi Scotty, I have a 1993 camry with 247,000 miles. The AC cools fine for about half an hour and cuts out. I did a system evac and had it recharged and the problem still persists. The mechanic said the whole system needs to be replaced for $1400 . What do you recommend? Thank you

Does the compressor continue to run after cold air stops coming out of the vents? If so, what are the system pressures at that point? Does the low pressure refrigerant line (larger diameter) continue to get cold? It could be your temperature blend door gets out of whack after the system has been running for a while.

Hi Chuck thank you so much for your help. After the AC stops cooling in the first half hour. The compressor still remains running. (I’ve turned on and off and felt it running and the clutch engaging by holding a screw driver to it and feeling the vibrations when switch is toggled on and off). At this point (after the first half hour) the low pressure reads 0 psi/ no reading given which leads me to assume there’s no refrigerant flowing at this point.

Could this be that some component is freezing over? I’ve already had an evac and recharge done still giving me the same results.

What is the high side reading? Obviously a low side showing zero while the compressor is running is bad if that is accurate. (Is it really just zero, or is it going into suction?) For diagnostic purposes it is essential to see pressures on both sides of the system.

Unfortunately I don’t have a gauge for the high side. The mechanic said it was going into suction when they did the evac and recharge.

You cannot do any meaningful diagnosis without a full gauge set.
