I have a 1996 Gmc Pickup that has 185k miles on it. (Purchased it with125k miles). The transmission fluid is fairly dark. Should I change the fluid? Or does the tranny have too many miles, and risk clogging up a valve with trash when I do?
(To my knowledge the fluid has never been changed or flushed)
I Love your videos, funny and extremely informative. You have helped me alot.
thanks,

Smell the ATF. If it smells burnt, do not touch it.
This is a situation where you are d@med if you do and d@med if you don't imo. Mine (2002) lasted about 75k and I rebuild it with stronger components. Almost 300k now and in all honesty needs rebuilt again... and I will when it gets bad as I'd replace all the parts anyway so just delaying the expense/work... but it's inevitable they need rebuilding unless babied all the time. Good thing is, now they have even better replacement parts available that improve longevity.
I had a '00 4L60e. I used it off-road and used the tranny really hard. I got it really hot sometimes too.
The fluid got really burnt, so I decided to flush it all out at around 120,000mi. I also installed an aux cooler at that time as well.
That tranny was still shifting like a champ when the vehicle got in a wreck at 170k.
