1996 JDM Toyota Hilux 2.8 turbo diesel automatic 4x4

I'm looking for a <$20k truck to haul small loads and explore 4WD trails in Hawaii. I work form home and do <2000 miles a year. There is a '96 Hilux ~100k miles recently imported from Japan available, but I'm wondering what your thoughts are on this versus a 2nd gen Tacoma. I could get a 2005 Taco from the mainland for $12-16k then ship it to Hawaii for $2-3k. The Hilux is a 2.8 turbo diesel automatic.

Well, I'd probably ship one from the mainland because the Hilux is. If they come from Japan have different parts you might not be able to get parts for them. I don't know what the situation is like in Hawaii. Here in the mainland states I would not buy Japanese import because it's hard to get parts and repair information on them
