I have a 1996 Chevy Silverado 1500, and the thing usually starts but occasionally doesn't want to. I own a landscape business and through the past months have noticed the security light has been on and off constantly. We had 2 mechanics look at it and one replaced the ignition system and it is still doing it. I have tried to program the new key by waiting 10 minutes and everything and still no one knows what the problem is. It only happens occasionally and not all the time. But when it doesn't start you wait 10 minutes and it will fire right up. It has no engine codes. So does anyone know where I should go from here???
The only thing I can think since you mentioned the key it sounds like the immobilizer in the key might be the issue if it even has one I haven't worked on a lot of trucks like that. But honestly I'm shooting in the dark because if the problem persists beyond a possible key issue(Scotty recommends you have a backup key for all modern cars that is known to be full working just incase of weird things like this) take the truck to someone with a dealer level scan tool if you guys don't have one and if someone like Scotty can't figure it out hit me back on here and I'll try and tag Scotty when I see him on and see what he thinks. @jacksonishere
I researched alot right after posting this and today I had done the 30 minute procedure to relearn my key. I have been turning it on and off this evening and haven't had problems yet. I really hope that is going to fix it. But I really have my doubts. If that doesn't work, I will install another new ignition and see what happens (since they don't cost much). After doing all that and it still won't work I will definitely be taking it to another mechanic, but since I live in a very rural area, not to many guys around here have dealer level scan tools. It's just really odd since 3/4 of the time it starts right up and the other quarter of the time it won't. Lets just PRAYY!!
