It may be blown.

My car temperature went up and car shut off.

Now it takes forever to start. Im sure is a blown headgasket, BUT NYC rip off mechanics want me to change the whole Engine without even trying.

Scotty, what do I do. I know they bullshitting me. I can try to replace the head gasket myself, but what else should I look for?

It could very well be just a head gasket but what kind of miles are on the car or most likely oil leaks does it have. Though it may not seem it to most a lot of times just changing the engine is the most long term cost effective repair. If the engine is worn sometimes changing the head gasket will raise compression back to a point the engine is to worn to handle and you will start burning oil. There are alot of variables but honestly just doing an engine is your best most functional course of action. A head gasket alone would be a gamble
