[Solved] Can I switch to a different gasoline octane number?

I have a 2007 Toyota 4Runner V6 4.0 engine with 276,000 miles and I’ve been putting 89 octane gas/mid-grade in my car for years now and since I live on the east coast it caused gas stations to only have regular/87 gasoline but I also want to save a few bucks on gasoline. So I looked in my owner's manual and it said that I can add regular/87. So I was wondering if I could switch to regular gasoline? I’ve heard that engine knocking could occur so I’m a bit skeptical about switching to a different type of gasoline than I normally add.

It says in the owner’s manual:  “Select Octane Rating 87 or higher.  Use of unleaded fuel with an Octane Rating lower than 87 may result in engine knocking.  Persistent knocking can lead to engine damage.”

So you are fine using 87 Octane.

You’ll be fine with 87.

Always go by the manual. You only need 87. 89 and 92 or 93 don't help you a bit in term of either fuel economy or engine performance.

In your case, 87 is fine.
