Heyy folks. So my 1999 Toyota Camry drivers door stopped working entirely. Both inside and outside. I locked my car after coming home from work and the next morning, the door stopped working. when I tried unlocking the lock hardly wanted to move with the rest of the doors. Any info would be great! Not sure the best way to work on it when it's closed 😊
Thank you for the answers! My girlfriend who didn't know it was broken tried pulling on it, so hard she broke the handle off. But the door opens now and the mechanism no longer is stuck. How fortunate!
FWIW, my 1999 Honda Accord had a similar problem. Went to lock it one day, and the drivers side door never opened it. I tried it from the inside. I tried it from the outside. The handle “worked” but felt like it wasn’t engaging anything. The actuator worked because you could hear the locks going up an down.
After researching the problem, it turned out to me a broken latch mechanism. I don’t remember the technical name.
The problem got fixed without my knowledge while I was away, so I don’t know exactly how it got fixed. I don’t even know how he got the door open since there is basically no way in. I did notice the panels on the frame beside the drivers seat were loose, so I am guessing that was his access point.
Not sure it is the same problem, but quite a possibility.
Take it to a locksmith. They may be able to remove the lock entirely and fix or replace it. First though, try a slim jim to see if that works.
