Got a 2000 chevy 1500. The fuel gauge show quarter tank then jumps to full and back and forth. Does any one know if this is the sending unit or if it's wire related? Or what I should check? It definitely isn't the fuel pump.

Generally it's the sending unit of gas tank breaking down the gasoline eats away the circuitry then they do that

Ok thanks scotty! Will check it out

Is this the same cause as for fuel gauge hummingbird flutter? Correct fuel level, but with the constant nervous twitch?? or is this a gauge issue? (99 sub k1500 in my case). I've seen alot of conflicting comments on other forums, but no one has bothered to indicate potential root cause..I appreciate the solvent action on the circuitry comment!!!) Some try to dampen the gauge using viscous oil injection..seems like a crap shoot in terms of choosing correct viscosity and inertness to internals.

Adding to Scotty’s response:  To be sure, hook up a scan tool and confirm the gauge and OBDII data (fuel) follow each other.
