Hey SCOTTY.

My 2001 Chevy Silverado v6 has 305K miles on it, Previously it was a fleet vehicle before I bought it. But I feel that it should have more power than it does, especially going up hill it has to downshift sometimes, almost like i'm pulling something.

I have a 420 code but when I looked at the Cat.... it turns out that someone has removed both Cat Converters and just welded a pipe to the exhaust where the Cat should be.

Also it shifts a little rough going from 2-3. I added the Lucas transmission treatment and it seems to have helped only slightly. Can't drain the transmission fluid to replace the fluid, because I actually have a drain plug (after-market addition?) but it has been stripped out by the previous owner and I can't remove it.

I use the truck for work and get around just fine, can get up to speed on the highway 80-90 mph or more. Should I just live with the performance issues going uphill or is there anything I can do to boost power, could the actual muffler be slowing me down?

I want to make it last another 100k miles at least.

I don't think the muffler is making your car slow down. Because you said that your car has 300k+ miles, it could be that your transmission is very worn. If the transmission is not going out, you could live with it.

Thanks for the reply. Are there any special tricks that can keep it going for another 100k miles? The transmission is the week spot, but not slipping at all. I guess a worn drain plug on the transmission pan means that someone has been changing it regularly

You'll have to drop the pan to change the trans fluid.  The original didn't have a drain plug because the manufacturer wanted the filter changed with a fluid change but a lot of people bought after market pans with drain plugs so they could just change the fluid.
