2001 Honda Civic - Should I buy?

Hi Scotty, I've been binge watching your YouTube videos and they're amazing!

I'm on the verge of buying a 2001 Civic LX, manual, 113k, $2800 from a 1st owner, private seller in suburbia. It's a zippy car in what seems to be reasonable shape. I drove a 2000 for 7 years with no big issues except for body rust and a terminal fender-bender:(

What should I look for?

Is there a deal-breaker for this model year?

Do the transmission failures (common in this model year) only affect automatics?

There's a tiny bit of gritty oil on the engine and possibly a fast tempo ticking that would normally not alarm me, but now i know enough to be cautious. I would never have been able to tell by the way it drives. Very nice.

I am only hesitating because I've read so many bad reviews for that year. I understand that it's a new generation of civic which has a load of new kinks to work out, but I'm not in the market for expensive fixes.

Maybe you can help to guide me.

Thanks!!

Shannon

The transmission failures for that year do only affect the automatics. The price is a little too high in my opinion though. Have a mechanic check it out first

@brandon-king101
Thanks for transmission info!

And, yeah, it's a little steep considering 19yrs old. But, moreso thinking about my future costs.

Thanks!

THE TRANSMISSION IN THIS MODEL YEAR 2001-2002 IS HORRIBLE but that only applies to automatics. Make sure this one doesn't have any rust and 2800 is a lot for a 20 year old car so bring it to a mechanic and offer him $1900

IF you can bring the price down it's not bad

@mrrangerzr1
I would pay no more than 2k

I'll try to work on the price.
Must say, though, this car has almost no rust... not even around rear wheel wells. Most people in Mass aren't selling for much less unless it's a real beater with many miles. Patience Daniel-son. Maybe there are reasonable people on craigslist, yet. (I say to myself)
Thanks folks.
