OK so my little Green Goblin Focus Wagon (231K miles) had code P411 (Secondary Air Injection). Years ago, this happened, and I replaced the diverter valve reset codes problem solved so I thought I'd do the same thing this time. Now as soon as it shifts to 2nd the car dies. Restart take off and dies again after going into second gear. I've looked everything over and nothing is loose. No codes either!

Yes, you can record live data as the problem happens to take a look at what might be going wrong afterwards. These days many inexpensive scan tools have that capability. (If a code was set you'd be able to check freeze frame data.)

There's a lot of data even in a 20-year-old car, just look for anything out of whack that might be causing or contributing to the problem. If there is a code set there would also be freeze-frame data stored when that happened. If unsure there are plenty of tutorials on youtube and other places online.
