2004 GMC Yukon XL won’t pass smog

  • Hi Scotty. My father has a 2004 GMC Yukon XL with 220,000 miles. It's been neglected and a little abused. Piston rings are barely there at this point. Mechanic replaced oil pump with new high flow one he had, timing chain, serpentine belt and all front gaskets, including intake manifold gasket and knock sensors with new harness for them. He also put 20W-50 full synthetic. I asked why out of curiosity and he said it'll help with the damage that was done from going a year without an oil change, and with lubrication. Seems to be working pretty damn good. What else should I have him check? I also have a check engine code that's been coming up since the knock sensors were replaced. It's P0327. It won't pass smog, cause California. Thanks!

If you want to keep it, either rebuild the engine or swap it.

With "barely there piston rings" it's probably burning oil and the reason it won't pass smog, and the knock code it telling you, it's detecting a knock, likely toast from the neglect you mentioned.. Like @yaser said, time for a rebuild or engine swap if you want to keep it.
