hi Scotty, I recently purchased a 2004 Nissan Pathfinder, shortly after purchase the service engine light came on, got a P0731 code.  it was shifting into second just a bit hard, other gears seemed smooth.  took it back to car lot, they swapped out the transmission.  after driving about 35 miles it felt like it was shifting a bit hard from 1st to 2nd again then a few trips later the service engine light came on again.  code reads 731 again.  what could be the problem?  113000 miles

The stealership either swapped out your bad transmission for another bad transmission, or they really didn't do anything other than clear the code and give it back to you.

You can find causes for that code here:

This problem really should have been found during the pre-purchase inspection.

i just discovered that the cruise control will not engage at 60mph - tried it at 30mpg and it works. could this be a faulty speed sensor and could that also have something to do with the transmission?

my bad - cruise control works
