Hey Scotty I have a 2004 Corolla 1.8l manual transmission with 175,000 miles. I recently have noticed I was losing oil so I changed my Timing chain tensioner that was seeping a little. But I'm still losing oil 3/4 of a quart every 500 miles. I changed the pcv too. I've checked for leaks, I think it might be burning oil. How can I tell ? And how can I remedy it?
I think it might be burning oil. How can I tell ?
If oil is not leaking (check valve cover) then it's probably burning.
- Check for spark plug fouling
-
If valves stems aren't sealing, I don't know of any test other than replacing them.
- Measured cylinder compression weak. This would indicate failed piston rings.
And how can I remedy it?
You could try some strong oil system cleaner, and maybe it'll free up the piston rings some and help a little bit, but there is no remedy. You live with it , or get a new car.
Your engine is shot. I'd take @mmj's recommendation and get a compression test and a leak down test as well. Maybe you'll get lucky and just have to replace the valve stem seals.
