hi scotty and DIYers.

thanks again scotty for your utube channel and providing signal not noise regarding cars
and the industry.

by looking at the graphs you can see some "weird" and sometimes "impossible" data.
also rare misfire.  occasional hesitation.  as added notes.

bluedriver pulled the data.  i converted some of it to graphs.
i have more to explore but this is enough to start.

no check engine light.
passes smog and mode6

just trying to stay ahead of old car issues.  maybe this is don't worry yet kind of affair.

trim was lowered by using royal purple and CRC cleaners injector cleaners with half tank not full tank.
but still about 5% error.

so first i have to verify the bad data is real.  eg is avalon at fault (odb or sensors glitching?)
or the bluedriver glitching?

but if data is legit then ... timing advance an issue?  time to service?
or wait for a check engine light?  or how far should it drift before i worry ?

plugs are due.  expensive job for this car.
oil is clean. changed 2x year or every 7-8 months max.  i never blow the 7000km period.
air filter ... ah good question.  i need to open that box again.  ooops.
was not "change now" in august or sept.

can print more data.  or run more trips with the logs.

i'm trying to keep this car as long as possible and trying to get ahead of fails and major repairs.

EG do i wait for a check engine light for timing issues?
or do i wait for a certain degree drift from normal before the check engine light engages?

is delaying old plugs more than just bad practice.  eg can i damage the engine with misfires
from old plugs?

is the avalon 2005 XLE (made in kentucky bought in canada) an interference engine
or a non-interference engine?

efficiency is waning in city especially.  winter or summer.  not as good as it used to be.
14.5/100km not unheard of with lots of city driving.  even 15L/100km and i'm being
very light footed in city.

enjoy the graphs.
if there's interest i can create more and gather more data as requested.

cheers,
ETA2 in the greater toronto area.

This is an interference engine.  At 17 years old, your timing being off may be because of a stretched timing chain.  Although they all say it should last the life of the engine, it will not.  Consider replacing the timing chain kit.  Definitely change the plugs.  What is the mileage?  Decreased fuel economy can be winter blend fuel, lower compression and other things.

hi doc.
thanks for weighing in.  fuel efficiency suffers summer and winter.  just moreso in winter.
less noticeable on highway.

sorry i forgot my odometer.
call it 246 000km rounding up.

how much angle variation means "bad" in the timing data ?
no check engine light.   no DTCs listed when i use the bluedriver.

i only see odd figures logging drives and inspecting the logged live data.

i agree several things should be done.  this is more a matter of spacing them out to afford them
as they are not low bill repairs.  the manifold has to come off and then some just to change the plugs.

this is sadly not as accessible as my old girl friend's corolla way back.  otherwise i would have swapped the plugs out.
something like the avalon is beyond my competence at this point i think.
