2005 civic, standard transmission, wont shift into reverse or overdrive, WHY???

If it shifts fine in the other gears but not reverse or overdrive, it generally means that the synchros are worn out and the trans needs a rebuild.

If you're very lucky it might be worn bushings or alignment off in the shift linkage or possibly the clutch is not quite releasing fully. Other than that you're looking at internal transmission wear. The car is 16 years old but you didn't say how many miles. When was the last time transmission oil was changed?
