2005 Corolla Idle/Startup when warm

Hello,

I bought a 2005 Corolla CE a few weeks ago with a standard transmission and 173,000 miles on it. I’ve noticed since driving it once the car warms up the idle gets a little rough (not a massive shake, just a slight one). Plus, when shutting off the engine and re-starting it, it seems to struggle to start back up when it’s warmed up, might take and extra crank. Anything come to mind?

Hi! Have an overall check on your new car if you have the time, congrats by the way.

Had the same problem, but we had to replace an old sparkplugs, hi-tension wire/cable (because our old 97 Corona still has a distributor system), and when it still had the hard starting while warm, we replaced the fuel pump! And it was fixed. Should check your fuel filter too while you're at it. 🙂  You can go straight to the fuel pump, but since we're a fan/family/students of uncle Scotty, we have to use Common Sense. So we have to do it step by step first, before concluding to a common fix, which might work or might not be the problem of your Corolla.

In terms of the idling, maybe it's not set right? Throttle Position Sensor/TPS, or maybe a small vacuum hose leak? Or dirty Idle Air Control Valve, it might be sticky and or getting stuck open or close. You can clean and check that too, especially if you don't know the history of the maintenance of the car.

Pardon my long response. ^_^

Thanks! I’m going to err on the side of caution and just go ahead and do the fuel pump, fuel filter and spark plugs. I just finished watching scotty’s video on cleaning an engine to make it run better and I’m going to do that too. I’ll post after I work on it this weekend and let you know results.

Great! Hopefully it fixes the problem! Lastly, if it's the fuel pump, get a good one like the Denso one. It's worth the buck.
