When I press on the gas pedal a tiny bit/cruise on the road, I hear a humming/whining sound from my back end. I can control the noise by pressing on the pedal a little or letting off.

Cross your fingers it's just a worn U-joint. If not, I would open up the rear axle and check the wear pattern on the gears.
