My sister was driving on the highway with her 2005 highlander, 2 hours into her trip the ac stopped blowing cold and hot air started coming out of the vents, even with the blower turned off. What cpuld cause this, is it safe for her to drive the rest of the way?

Unless it's overheating there should be no problem driving with the AC nonfunctional, comfort aside. The air conditioning needs to be diagnosed to determine the problem. (Could be any number of issues.)

Even with everything turned off hot air srill comes out of the vents, so it would be ok to drive?

I can't think of any reason it could not be driven, as I said, as long as the engine is not overheating. Hot air continuing to blow out of the vents is an indication the blend door may be stuck in the full-hot position. Or, if she is in a hot & sunny location it could be due to heat soak of the dashboard and venting system. That's where the old-school vent windows are really better when there's no AC. (She could just close the vents to keep the hot air from blowing in.)

Ok thank you
