delayed shifting into 'D' gear

Hi Scott! Love your videos. I have a 2005 subaru forester with 180,000. The transmission sometimes takes a couple seconds before actually going into drive after reversing. It happens more when it's cold, I live in Wisconsin. That's been happening for about a year, and now sometimes while driving it shifts hard or possibly slips. My question is should I try lucas transmission slip additive or is that just snake oil? If i need transmission work done what would you think it might cost? Thanks in advance for taking the time to read and respond.

The Lucas additive is pretty much snake oil but can sometimes extend the life of a dying transmission for a little while. It is a last resort when there is nothing left to lose.

When is the last time that transmission was serviced? (It costs several thousand dollars to have a rebuilt transmission installed.)

transmission maintenance service starts at around $200. Doing that every 60k or so gives it the best chances of lasting a long time. See FAQ for details.

Additives are not a substitute for maintenance.
