2006 Pontiac Grand Prix Intermittent Starting Issue

Hey scotty,

I have an 2006 pontiac grand prix base model with just over 75,000 miles with automatic transmission. It has an issue for the last few months when i go to start the car the power will be cut right in the middle of starting and the engine will just die out. If i turn the key back to off then start again it will start up with no problem. It is very intermittent and doesn't do it all the time. I also have a "charging system" warning with a battery symbol that intermittently pops up on the center display. I had the negative battery terminal ground wire cleaned (it had some corrosion on it) and the alternator replaced with a brand new one to no avail. The alternator ground wire looked ok so it wasn't touched. There is no check engine light by the way. I took it to my local mechanic and he said he couldn't reproduce the problem. He said he took for multiple test drives with a portable diagnostic machine hooked up but it wasn't picking up any codes. He also said he hooked it up the the big diagnostic machine and that wasn't pulling any codes either. He said all his equipment was the latest and greatest and calibration was up to date. My car came equipped with anti theft system and a remote start system, both have been disabled by me via center console options. Not sure what the problem is and i'm at my wits end. Maybe you could help.

Regards,

Aaron Lewis

It sounds like you have an electrical gremlin somewhere. And I'm willing to bet it is somehow tied to that anti-theft system. GM is pretty famous for electrical issues so it isn't surprising.

Just being honest, the amount of work it would take to trace down exactly where the issue is is not worth your time or effort, and it would cost too much to pay a mechanic to trace it down. It doesn't hinder using the vehicle, so I would say live with it and consider it a trait of the car. It is 15 years old, so if that's the worst issue you have you are doing pretty good.
