I know you're a big fan of both vehicles. With your years of experience , have you ever changed the starter just as part of routine maintenance ? Or do you follow "if it aint broke, don't fix it"
Both cars currently trouble free and never a sign of starter trouble.
2007 Corolla : Grandma car, only 33,000 miles. But a tremendous amount of short trips, starting and stopping
2013 Civic: 116,000 miles. Good condition.
When / If they fail, do they slowly die or do they just leave you stranded?
That's what worries me.

Never had to change one for maintenence. Sometimes these starters will last the whole life of the vehicle and there is no need to mess with it.
You are more likely to wear through batteries with the short trips.
