2007 Honda Fit 126,000 km (78,000 mi) has a funny grinding noise upon a cold startup. This happens sometimes, but it's more frequent nowadays. I also have to add that it does this all seasons, from summer to winter, so I don't think it's weather related. Sounds like the starter drive is hanging up in the flywheel ring gear.
Yes. Also inspect the flywheel ring gear for damage. Rotate the engine and watch for damaged flywheel ring gear teeth. If it is damaged the new starter pinion gear may or may not engage or disengage properly.
