Hi,

my van has a vibration u can feel in the peddles and noise coming from back somewhere. I’m no mechanic. How do I determine if it’s u-joint, carrier bearing, or ring & pinion bearing, to avoid paying too much? 162K miles. Thanks

How do I determine if it’s u-joint ...

By inspecting. Lift the vehicle, get under, and hook your peepers on it.

grab each part and shake it, lift it, turn it, etc. . It should not move.

Look for obvious signs of damage, or junk wrapped around the driveshaft.

Take the axle cover off. Is there enough fluid in there? What does it look like?

carrier bearing

Unless you have an extended wheelbase van, there is no carrier bearing.

You will also want to check wheel bearings, wheel alignment, tire balance etc.

Step one: move the front wheels to the back and see if anything changes. Inspect tires for damage. Check for slop.

You could also use a listening device (see FAQ for details).
