2008 Corolla intermittently grinding in 3rd gear

Hello,

My 2008 Corolla has an issue only when upshifting from 2nd to 3rd where there will be a loud grinding noise sometimes when the car is cold and/or when shifting quickly.

The car only has 70k miles on it, but the previous owner seemed to have issues driving a manual because I bought the car when it had 55k miles and the clutch needed to be replaced.

I'm pretty confident that it's a synchroniser issue.

My question is how long can my car last like this before I can't use 3rd gear?

I'm also asking this because I found a good deal on a 2011 corolla that wouldn't cost me much more when I consider the resale value of my current Corolla.

My 2008 is also starting to have rust on the rocker panel as I am in Canada (I'm converting units).

Basically, I would like to get an opinion on how long my current car can last like this and if it's a good idea to sell it while it has low miles.

If you can get a good price for your car, sell it. The transmission issue usually is expensive to repair. If you decided to keep your car, try to skip 3rd gear as much as you can.

If the gears aren't damaged it can last a good long time if you double-clutch going into 3rd gear. However if you found a good deal on a newer Corolla it would not be a bad idea to upgrade. Make sure a mechanic checks it out.
